Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from other editing programs?
Most editing programs take several months, if not years, to complete. Your training will be wrapped up in as little as six weeks, plus you can do all the training at home and don't have to attend a campus. The BIGGEST difference from other programs is that you're taught how to find the work, plus you're given contact details for places actively seeking editors. If you pass the final test, you're also given a Certificate of Certification, an endorsement from The Publishing Circle that will enhance your opportunities for finding editing work and give you credibility.
Do I need to have editing skills already?
Basic skills are helpful, however, if you're just starting out, you can start at a lower level, such as a proofreader, and work your way up to more lucrative jobs.
What does the "list of places seeking editors" include?
This is a refined list that includes places that are actively seeking editors. In the program, you'll learn how to approach these employers. In addition, once you're in the program, if any new opportunities come up, you're emailed about them for a full year.
While that list is valuable, you'll also learn how to find individual authors or small publishers who need editors. Knowing how to approach them can keep your editing pipeline full, plus it gives you the luxury of only taking the work you want.
What does the "how to build your business" part entail?
You're shown exactly what you need to do to set up your business as a professional editor. Elements of the training include downloadable materials, such as sample letters to go out to individual authors or publishers; what to charge when you're starting out; how to set up a basic payment system; and more. Once you finish the course, you'll be ready to start offering your services.
How much money can I make as an editor?
That's going to depend on your skill level. No one starts out as an experienced editor; that's a skill gained over time. In the course you'll be equipped with easy-to-follow materials that will ramp up your skill level quickly. Personally, I've never made less than $3500 per book and have made as much as $8000. In the course we'll talk about the way to price and the reasoning behind different pricing.
How does the certification work?
Those who pass the additional editing test with at least a 95% score will receive certification (and a printable certificate) from The Publishing Circle. The test may be taken as often as desired if you don't pass the first time. Having certification from a respected publisher is valuable. The certification is good for one year and then is renewable for $98 per year thereafter.
How long will I have access to the training?
You'll have access for a full year from date of purchase.
Am I guaranteed work?
No. Unfortunately, no one can guarantee that. What does happen, however, is that you're given all the training you need to find editing jobs, a list of places actively seeking editors, and sample letters to send out that can be tailored to your new editing business. Additionally, those who pass the editing test are included in the pool of editors from which The Publishing Circle draws. We can't promise we'll use every editor who passes the program, but you'll have the best shot at becoming one of the editors we use.
What is the refund policy?
Refunds are only issued after the first session. You must attend that session in order to qualify for a refund. If you attend and decide this course is not for you, we'll gladly refund the price of the course.
